Signs and Signals

Harvest Partner — September 29, 2014

Signs and signals are important. In fact they can be lifesavers!

Traffic signals, warning signs near high voltage towers or a recurring sharp pain are signs and signals that alert us to something we need to be aware of – something that is critically important.

Jesus speaks of the signs of the times and tells His disciples to be watchful, faithful and wise as history unfolds.signs

I watch the daily news and I’m thankful for the window on the world provided by my TV screen. But I am much more grateful for the precious Word of God and the window it provides into His heart. His perspective on history is calming as I see global tensions escalate.

It is nearly impossible to watch the turmoil plaguing one nation after another— from severe conflicts to virus epidemics—and not feel the need to help, somehow. While pondering all this in prayer, asking the Lord how we can respond to the eggshell fragility of our world, my thoughts went back to the Gospel and to some of Paul’s letters.

The repetition of a few things caught my attention. First up, the need to pray. The immense place of prayer in the New Testament Church is striking. With each breath of prayer they affirmed the existence of the Kingdom of God on earth. In prayer they appealed to the power of God’s Word and Spirit to change hearts and lives. They also pledged their trust in the sufficiency of Christ and His grace.

harvestA second thing often repeated is the need to be faithful. This call to loyal faithfulness addresses both our personal lives and our service in the Name of the Lord. Throughout the epistles there is a strong sense that, in light of Christ’s return, we are to continue to make the Gospel present to people everywhere, understanding the urgency of our time.

In 1 Thessalonians 1 Paul talks of those who welcomed the message of Christ in spite of severe suffering. What a powerful reminder to us that the Gospel can pierce through the harshest circumstances and create new life and hope in the midst of oppression.

Current global tensions send important signals. They mean different things to different people. But to the child of God they signal that we are to watch and pray and keep on sharing the glorious Gospel of salvation.

Colca is a village that has great need. The problems and difficulties are overwhelming for many, and there are a lot of people here who suffer from alcoholism and poverty. “It’s in the midst of doing ministry that I met Benigno. Early on, he told me that he knew a lot of Bible principles. He knew biblical ideas, but no one had ever taught him how to really follow Jesus. It gave him real problems in his life." Read more...
